Our Story

Almost 27 years ago - in June 1994 - Markus had the chance of a lifetime to work in a country that was completely unknown to him. He travelled to Malaysia to gain his first international experience working for the subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH.

He met many nice people there, locals and Germans. But there was one person in particular with whom he had a very special relationship. Friendship turned into love and love into a deep and intimate relationship that has now lasted for over 25 years.

On 18 June 1996 - 25 years ago - the two got married in Duisburg. And they had 4 wedding dates: 18.6.1996 - 18.7.1996 - 19.7.1996 - 15.2.1997....

An International Relationship

1994: Penang, Malaysia

Getting to know each other, falling in love, and seperating, because at the end of Markus' almost one-year stay in Penang, he had to return to the cold gloomy Germany.

1995: Duisburg, Germany

Steffanie visits Markus in Germany - and certainly not in the most beautiful city. But a new job has brought him there. Against all odds, they both decide to give it a try together: a relationship between the Rhine-Ruhr area and the exotic.

1996: Duisburg, Germany

Marriage with obstacles. Getting the necessary papers was anything but easy in Germany at that time. The authorities played along and the date was fixed: 19.7.1996.

But then the date at the registry office had to be brought forward by 4 weeks on very short notice, because otherwise Steffanie would not have been able to accept a great job offer. Thanks to the genuine help of an understanding official at the Duisburg registry office, a new date was found: 18.06.1996.

1996: Bonn, Germany

The marriage should also be valid under Malaysian law, so on 18.07.1996 the marriage was registered at the Malaysian Embassy in Bonn - a formal and not very romantic procedure. But important!

1996: Ratingen, Germany

Guests had been invited and dinner booked for the original date of the wedding. At the Hotel Litzbrück in Ratingen. They were joined by the marriage witnesses, good friends and the German part of the family. Date 19.07.1996

1997: Penang, Malaysia

At the end of the wedding dates comes the important Malaysian part: on 15.02.1997 the Buddhist tea ceremony took place. The bride and groom offer a traditional tea to the bride's family. By accepting it, the groom is also accepted into the family.
